Portomarin
<
Today we start the hike at Sarria and arrive at the village of Portomarin. There are several small villages along the way. The path is full of small bars to meet the needs of the 100 km peregrino. After leaving Sarria, you cross the train tracks and start a pronounced steep climb for a few kms. until you reach level terrain that continues most the the Camino. There are cow farms throughout the path. Some paths follow the village roads and other paths are through forest. The last forest after Ferreiros is interesting because it was probably a Celtic ceremonial forest. After the forest there is a descent until you reach Portomarin.
The original village of Portomarin was located in the reservoir & was moved to higher ground. The Templar church was dismantled stone by stone and was rebuilt at the higher level of the new village of Portomarin. There are several albergues and restaurants. There is a good hotel – Pousada de Portomarin – top right corner of village map. Bus service is available early morning to Lugo with connections to Santiago de Compostella. Portomarin is a must stop.
Sarria to Portomarin ~ 24 kms. Terrain is mostly level with some hills. Dirt and road terrain. Difficulty is 6/10.
