statistics of the camino de santiago

The Camino Frances & the Camino Portugal have shown a steady increase of the yearly number of peregrinos the past 20 years. This Camino Frances continues to be the most popular, followed by the Camino Portugal starting in O’Porto. Guessing the number of peregrinos that walk the entire Camino de Santiago is difficult to quantify because many do so in stages and do not necessarily start at Roncesvalles, nor do they complete the entire journey to Santiago de Compostela in one trip. A flow of peregrinos has steadily increased yearly in the Camino de Santiago.

Some statistics & charts available are those peregrinos that start the Camino de Santiago in St Jean Pied de Port [France] or in Roncesvalles [Spain]. Statistics are available for the number of peregrinos that receive the Compostela credential at the end of their journey in Santiago de Compostela & in Muxia. Muxia is short, so statistics are simple. Portugal has recently created separate statistics for the interior & coastal portions starting in Porto.

Those statistics for USA peregrinos statistics are now available for those hiking the Camino Frances & Camino Portugal. A recent trend for USA peregrinos is to hike the Portugal Camino and select the coastal route. See the Elevations page for each of these Caminos. Traffic tends to level off after mid September because universities start in Spain. Hiking the Caminos from mid September through end of December is a good choice. Weather is cooler & the albergues are less crowded. Many albergues are closed after October. However there are still plenty of albergues that are open through December that can handle the smaller crowds. Here is a list of charts with statistics of peregrinos in the Camino de Santiago.
