Sahagun
< El Burgo Ranero / Carrion de los Condes >
Today I will buy a bus ticket for the Alsa bus either to Terradillo de Templarios or Sahagun or Mansilla de Mulas or Leon. The day starts with an 18 km hike with no villages and a path full of rocks to Calzadilla de la Cueza. A very long hike with no bars or restaurants along the way. Ledigos has a good private albergue as well as Terradillo de Templarios and Sahagun is another 15 kms away after Templarios. Sahagun is the midpoint of the French Camino. Sahagun is an important farming hub of Palencia and has a Renfe railway connection to other cities like Leon. It has good restaurants, and has lodging. It may be worthwhile to skip that long 45 km hike & simply arrive and stay at Sahagun.
My preference is to take the Alsa bus at Carrion and skip this rocky road hike. Arrive at Ledigos or Terradillo de Templarios or Sahagun or Mansilla de Mulas or Leon. Sahagun is a major town in Palencia. At the Nun monastery, which serves as an albergue part of the year, there is a burial site of Rey Alfonso VI of Castilla & Leon who was born 1041 & died 1109. The burial tombs of 3 consorts & his daughter Elvira who was married to Raymond IV of Toulouse. The story of Elvira is fascinating. Sahagun is of Roman times. Sahagun has a fully functional Roman bridge that still stands today.
Carrion de los Condes – Terradillo de Templarios ~ 30 kms | Sahagun ~ 45 kms. Difficulty 8/10
