Villafranca del Bierzo
Today we start the hike at Ponferrada and arrive at the Village of Villafranca del Bierzo. An alternative for today is to take the Alsa bus from Ponferrada to Villafranca del Bierzo. Another alternative is to walk to the village of Cacabelos and take the bus to Villafranca. I don’t recommend walking from Cacabelos to Villafranca because the climb is steep and the road leading to Villafranca is not well protected. Villafranca is of medieval times and a spectacular village to walk around. It is best to arrive early if possible.
The albergue Fenix of Jesus Jato is located at the camino entrance close to the castle and next to the church. There is a medieval Cathedral in Villafranca. There are excellent restaurants like Don Nacho’s in Villafranca. Don’t forget the Mencia wine produced in this region. It has to be from Roman times. Enjoy your day of rest in Villafranca. The following day is a steep mountain climb to O’Çebreiro [ 1st village of Galicia ].
Ponferrada to Villafranca del Bierzo ~ 24 kms. Difficulty is 5/10 and 7/10 between Cacabelos and Villafranca.
