the great camino de santiago
At Hospital de Orbigo – Camino de Santiago. The great Camino 24x. I first read about the Camino in a book written by Paulo Coehlo in 1998. I had never heard about this Camino. Paulo Coehlo’s book had a mix of fantasy & reality about the Camino. The Camino caught my interest so I placed this on my wish list. Sometime later I read a book written by Shirley McLaine – El Camino. Shirley McLaine was 60 years old when she walked the Camino in 1994. I have met physically fit women walking the Camino in groups in their late 70’s & at their own pace. Age is not a limiting factor.
It took five years to check mark this wish list. My first Camino was in 2003 and since then I have completed 24 trips. I decided to create a web site of the 3 main Caminos several years ago. A challenging project, in particular the maps. These are the Camino Frances in Spain, the Portugal Camino from Porto and the Muxia Camino in Galicia.
When I started, I had no maps, very little information and was poorly equipped. During my first Camino trip in 2003 there was lack of infrastructure. There was barely an albergue or two in each village. Fortunately there were hotels at some of the larger cities. I barely completed my first Camino.
Throughout the years the Camino has improved. I obtained more suitable equipment, hiking shoes, clothing, and selected my favorite villages. My agenda improved. There was better planning, I also hiked at a slower pace and found the good villages & albergues. I focused on the alternatives available on this complex transportation network over the 3 Caminos.
This web site was created for pilgrims who are planning to hike the Camino de Santiago in Spain, Portugal and Galizia (Muxia). It contains most of the information a peregrino would require. In fact, it contains more information than many books written about the Camino. The Camino is all about planning, setting your pace and marking that wish list.
