Camino-Portugal – Day # 12 – Santiago de Compostela
Santiago de Compostela
Distance – 24 kms. Difficulty 7 /10
Today we start the hike at Padron and arrive at the monumental city of Santiago de Compostela. It is my preference to skip this hike because it is fairly long and becomes industrial & urbanistic. The terrain has dirt trails, roads, hills, some forests. It is a challenging hike for the last day. If you arrive at Padron & decide not to stay, you can take a short lunch break and then take the Renfe train to Santiago.
If you stay at Padron, you can take a short breakfast the following day & take the Renfe train early morning to Santiago. The hike through the suburbs and industrial zone seems long, so I tend to skip this and arrive early at Santiago de Compostela. Santiago has so many places to see & so many restaurants and bars that I could stay several days. The Cathedral is a major monument and has interesting tours. Don’t forget to stamp the pilgrim passport.
If you are limited on time and would like to see Muxia, there is an early morning bus that leaves Santiago and returns early afternoon. You can obtain a peregrinos Compostela at the Municipal office in Muxia by showing your peregrino passport. Muxia has the Celtic village ruins at the coast and a church at the coast with large stones. Muxia is my preference over Finisterre. I consider Finisterre a touristy village. Santiago de Compostela has excellent transportation. It has an airport, it has a Renfe train station and a bus station close by. From Santiago you can return back to Portugal or most other large cities by train in Spain which include Madrid, Leon, Burgos, Logroño, Pamplona. Santiago de Compostela is an awesome city with world class hotels & restaurants.
