Coastal route
Caminha to Valenca
Distance – 28 kms Difficulty 6 /10, or take the train from Caminha to Valenca
Today we leave Caminha and arrive at Valenca. The terrain is mostly flat and borders the river Minho or Miño. There are several villages along the way. Today there is an alternative to take the train at Caminha and arrive early at Valenca. The train ride is about a 20 minute ride. It is best to arrive at Valenca early and spend the entire day. Valenca is the last village in Portugal before crossing into Spain. Valenca is a fortress village of medieval times. It is full of small shops. There is a good municipal albergue, hotels, and good restaurants. Note: when you cross the border into Spain there is a 1 hour + time zone change. If you are concerned about the Compostela certificate, the Portugal hike also qualifies for the Compostela certificate. Enjoy your day at Valenca.
Interior route
Rubiaes to Valenca
Distance ~ 18 kms. Difficulty 6 /10
Today we leave Rubiaes and arrive at Valenca. It has a large medieval fortressThe terrain has hiking paths, forests, hills and roads. The coastal and interior routes converge in Valenca. There are several villages along the way. Many peregrinos make a short stop at Valenca and continue their hike to the first village located in Spain which is of Tui. I would recommend a full day at Valenca and a full day at Tui. Both are medieval villages full of history. There are good shops in Valenca & good albergues, hotels & restaurants at both locations. Remember that extra day gained in Porto, you can take the train from Valenca to Caminha and visit the village of Caminha. No need to rush the Camino at these villages. Take a rest & enjoy your day at Valenca.
