Zubiri
Today we will hike from Roncesvalles to Zubiri. The hike starts at Roncesvalles and a short while later you arrive at the Village of Burgette. This village is from the early middle ages. This is Basque territory. The architecture of the Basque houses is very uniform and distinctive. White houses with red roofs.
Burgette is the town Ernest Hemingway frequented for his fishing trips. Ernest Hemingway wrote a novel – The Sun Also Rises, which frequently mentions Burgette and Pamplona. The Hotel Burgette is the location of Ernest Hemingway’s stays at this village. This Hotel still exists. Before leaving Burgette, take the trail at right of a local bank and follow the rural trail. You will hike by several small villages and walk inside a forest to the top of the trail before it slopes down to Zubiri. This is the last 1/4 of the hike. The trail is fairly rocky so watch your steps. An alternative to walking today would be to take the morning bus that leaves Roncesvalles & arrive at Zubiri or any further village. My preference is to take the bus and arrive at the village of Zubiri or Trinidad de Arre which has an ancient pilgrim albergue.
Roncesvalles to Zubiry – distance ~ 24 kms. Difficulty : 7 / 10 ( the last 1/4 portion of the hike is difficult, downhill with loose rocks )
